The Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra in Katowice celebrates the 200th anniversary of the birth of Chopin by bringing his music to ports around Europe including Copenhagen, Gothenburg, Oslo,  Dover and Boulogne-sur-Mer. The Orchestra will sail to these destinations on one of Poland's most beautiful ship Dar Młodzieży, which will be available to visitors free of charge.

The Polish National Symphony Orchestra of Katowice conducted by Jacek Kasprzyk with soloists Ewa Kupiec, described as one of the fastest rising artists of her time, will delight audiences with music, some of which has been chosen for its proximity to the sea but of course the music of Chopin will be the major influence of the concert and will include his Fantasy on Polish Airs and Andante Spianato and Grand Poloniase in E flat major.  The orchestra visited UK last year when it performed in a sell-out concert at the Canterbury Cathedral with Krzysztof Penderecki conducting his critically acclaimed St Luke Passion as part of Sounds New Contemporary Music Festival 2009.

“Dar Młodzieży” sails into the port of Dover on the 16th September and will be welcoming visitors during the day.  The ship, a three mast frigate, is a Polish sailing training vessel designed by Zygmunt Choreń and launched in 1982 in the Gdańsk Shipyard. The boat was built for around the world trips and can stay a maximum of 60 days at sea.   In 2006 it won the World Cup 2006 regatta around Bornholm.  It has competed in many of the world’s greatest sailing races. Chris Newey, Director of Passenger Services for DFDS Seaways English Channel, said: “We are delighted to be part of a project which is bringing such renowned Polish culture to the people of Kent. The event will be a celebration of beautiful classical music, rich in the influences of Chopin, and we are looking forward to welcoming the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra to Dover for this landmark event.”

The events in Dover are organised by the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra in Katowice, the Embassy of the Republic of Poland, and the Polish Cultural Institute in London and supported by the DFDS Seaways. The media partners of the event are Cooltura Polish Weekly Magazine, Polish Radio London and web portal elondyn.co.uk

The whole voyage will be supported by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage, Fryderyk Chopin  Institute in Warsaw and Adam Mickiewicz Institute in Warsaw.
