The Aesthetica Short Film Festival is an international film festival which takes place annually in York at the beginning of November. It is a celebration of independent film from around the world, and an outlet for supporting and championing filmmaking.

The festival programme is curated and culturally rich, where great filmmaking has the power to change lives. Films previously selected for the festival have gone on to win awards at BAFTA and the Oscars as well as other festivals such Sundance, SXSW amongst other.

 

This year five Polish short films have been selected:

Warsaw Rising VR (2018)

The first feature film in Poland executed in the virtual reality technology. It tells a story based on the fate of one of Warsaw insurgents, Capt. Władysław Sieroszewski alias "Sabała", who received a note with a message from his daughter when he was leaving to fight in the Uprising in August 1944. At the time, he did not know yet that the note would influence his further fate.

 

The Missed Spaceflight (2017)

In 1978 Poland got a chance to send its national into outer space. From four brave pilots - one has been chosen, while three of his replacements stayed on the ground. Samsung wanted to make their dream come true and created this VR experience - inspired by a Soyuz 30 spaceflight. Experience the fully rendered, claustrophobic Soyuz interior, relive the malfunction that almost ended the flight and see the Earth from a perspective of ‘70s cosmonaut.

New Bronx (2017)

Natalia is a boyish and impulsive girl in her mid-teens living in a rough part of Gdansk, Poland. Her crush on a boy from her neighbourhood becomes an obsession and she is prepared to do anything to get close to him. But when she finally reaches her goal, everything suddenly changes.

RED (2019)

RED is about the scraps of life of Judyta and her father Zbigniew, shown across several days following the death of Judyta’s brother, Marcin, killed in a car accident. As they try to come to terms with the void left by a loss of a loved one, all their mutual resentment and finger pointing is unexpectedly interrupted by a stranger: Red.

Play (2018)

A man consumed by guilt because he did not dare to defend his mother, he plays the role of a murderer and forces ten-year-old self to face trauma.
