Oskar Zieta's construction BLOW & ROLL using FiDU technology will be one the highlights of this year's London Design Festival.
The proportions and scale of the V&A installation reflect Zieta’s approach of pushing new borders - playing with different widths of inflated forms and finding new applications for the technology. To enable the presentation of such a large-scale installation, elements are transported on-site in rolls and then inflated in the Garden. The project is developed in collaboration with the Polish Cultural Institute in London.
FiDU technology allows to create uncommon, custom and unique shapes made of steel sheets. It is a new technique of digital processing of the traditional material – more precise, more predictable than human hand, but after all, it is mainly air and steel sheet. The moments of forces are calculated by a computer and the elements are produced automatically by robots. The preparation of the material before the inflation process is very precise. Inflation process brings poetry to it, adding the unpredictable factor to the manufacturing process.
FiDU is a 3 step process – first, two metal sheets are cut into desired shapes, second – they are welded around the edges, third – air is pumped between the layers of sheets and the object is inflated into a 3d form.
With all the advantages of mass and efficient production FiDU allows to form individualized and complicated shapes which were not achievable earlier or became too expensive or too time-consuming for other technologies.
