Born in 1910, Roman Maciejewski developed his abundant musical talents at the Warsaw Music Institute before being expelled for his part in a student strike. He escaped Poland?s devastation during World War Two as an exile in Sweden, where he worked regularly with Ingmar Bergman. Maciejewski reflected on the fortitude and suffering of his homeland in the mighty Missa Pro Defunctis (1946-59). Traces of Mozart, Verdi, Ravel and Stravinsky never swamp the individuality and nobility of Maciejewski?s deeply moving score which is performed in the ideal setting of Westminster Cathedral.
