BCLT/TA Mentoring Scheme 2011-12

Antonia Lloyd-Jones mentoring Garry Malloy

In September 2011 a new mentorship programme was launched by the UK Translators Association, funded by the Gulbenkian Foundation and the Foyle Foundation, with the participation of various cultural institutes, to encourage young translators at the start of their career.

The Polish Cultural Institute is funding a mentorship for translator Garry Malloy, who is a graduate of Glasgow University, to be mentored by established translator Antonia Lloyd-Jones. The project will last for six months, in which time Garry aims to translate some short prose by Sławomir Mrożek with Antonia's guidance. He will also learn about the practicalities of working as a freelance translator, and will attend group events for all the 'mentees' taking part in the programme.

Following a pilot project, this is the first full programme, involving thirteen pairs of mentors and mentees working in twelve languages. At the end of the programme their work will be published in an anthology.

Garry Malloy studied Polish philology under Dr Elwira Grossman at the University of Glasgow, and graduated in 2003. After years of getting to grips with Polish grammar and pronunciation, he decided to enter the challenging world of nursing, thereby swapping Różewicz and consonant clusters for sick bowls and a sphygmomanometer. He eventually hung up his bedpan and moved to Poland in 2010. He currently works as a freelance translator and teacher of English in Warsaw. Previous work includes translations for the Polish Book Institute and the Miłosz Festival in Krakow.

Antonia Lloyd-Jones is a translator of Polish literature, whose publications include The Last Supper by Pawel Huelle, for which she won the Found in Translation award 2009. She translates fiction, poetry, children's books and non-fiction, including reportage by several of Poland's leading foreign correspondents. She will introduce Hugo-Bader's work with some extracts and photographs from White Fever, which was published by Portobello Books in August this year.
