In February, Black Dog Publishing are pleased to announce the release of the first complete survey on the work of Polish artist Krzysztof Wodiczko. This impressive volume captures more than 40 years of the artist’s work, Wodiczko uses contemporary technologies throughout his work, producing an oeuvre that addresses war, urban violence, trauma, displacement, memory and communication; work that has made Wodiczko into one of the most vociferous political artists of our time.
Krzysztof Wodiczko is renowned for his large-scale slide and video projections onto architectural facades and monuments across the globe. He has realised more than 80 public projections in Australia, Austria, Canada, England, Germany, Holland, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Poland, Spain, Switzerland, and the United States. Wodiczko pioneered ‘Interrogative Design’ practice, combining art and technology and went on to develop tools and devices for urban interventions, designed to give voice to communities and cultural issues that have often been neglected and marginalised within society. These include vehicles, such as Homeless Vehicle,1988–89, and portable or wearable instruments, such as Dis-Armor,1999–present.
Including unpublished texts by Wodiczko himself, Krzysztof Wodiczko is the definitive study of the artist’s work. Richly illustrated, Krzysztof Wodiczko also features a diverse selection of images, ranging from digital montages and preliminary visualisations to sketches and photographs. Krzysztof Wodiczko is the first comprehensive study of the artist’s work, its ethical and political imperatives, and the diverse interpretive lenses through which his work has been viewed.
Developed in close collaboration with the artist, and bringing together an array of essays by leading scholars from a variety of disciplines, the book represents the most significant and sustained engagement with the artist’s practice to date. It is an engaging and informative volume for anyone interested in contemporary art and design practices.
Krzysztof Wodiczko was born in 1943 in Warsaw, Poland before emigrating to Canada. He now divides his time between Boston, USA, where he teaches at MIT, New York, and Warsaw. An exhibition of works by the artist opens at Galerie Lelong, New York on 12 February 2011, and at Black Dog Publishing in September 2011.
