The Personal is Political: How Polish women negotiate the price of migration + Q&A

This double bill of films offers two observational documentaries exploring the everyday struggles of two Polish women in London.

Violetta lives in a shared house in Plumstead with her adopted friends, lovers and family. Ordinary life is seen from her perspective, and she candidly analyses her feelings and experiences of migration in intimate interviews, stories and memories.

The film Husband and Wife follows Beata who has travelled to Lewisham to collect her husband’s ashes and achieve closure on a traumatic period of her life. But when she arrives, she finds a hostile environment which she doesn’t understand. The filmmakers follow her on a relentless journey through Kafkaesque procedures and personal flashbacks until she sets her mind, and her marriage, at peace.

Following the films there will be a panel with:
Violetta (protagonist of Violetta)

Directors M+M Hawkins

Candida Yates (Professor of Culture and Communication, Bournemouth University)

Dr. Elena Marchevska (Senior Lecturer in Drama and Performance, LSBU)
