PrintIn Poland - Celebration of the 600th anniversary of the battle of Grunwald in Malbork Castle Museum
The Malbork Castle Museum is the greatest medieval defence complex, which in 1997 was listed as a prestigious UNESCO Cultural Heritage Site. It is the most important place in Poland where the 600th anniversary of the battle of Grunwald is commemorated.
We want to avoid celebrating victories and emphasize defeats at Malbork, we do not wish to focus on military subjects. We want to reflect upon the heritage of the world which was already fading away and all the ideas that inspired people of that era as well as upon contemporary meaning of those distant events. Which of those concepts and values have stood the test of time, which have sunk into oblivion and how do we evaluate those events, we the people of the 21st century, who build the united Europe.
During the Grunwald Year, the Malbork Castle Museum has prepared plenty of interesting events. The exhibition “Artistic Foundations in the Teutonic Order’s State in Prussia” (date: 26 June - 12 September) appears as the most significant. It’s a presentation of the best or the most interesting historical works of the art from the area of Teutonic Prussia, that now belong to Polish museums and church institutions.
Moreover, “The Siege of Malbork” (date: 22 - 25 July) is an event gaining a wide popularity every year. This year’s edition of this cyclical open-air event bringing together knights’ fellowships as well as artisan and artistic groups will be held one week after a reenactment of the battle of Grunwald. It will feature a highly spectacular show, i.e. a re-enactment of the attack of King Władysław Jagiełło’s troops on the Teutonic stronghold, as well as smaller accompanying events, such as a mediaeval fair to be held in the castle’s intermural space, and various skirmishes between knights.
