“Dar Młodzieży” celebrates the 200th anniversary of the birth of Chopin by bringing the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra in Katowice to Dover.
A breathtakingly beautiful ship, “Dar Młodzieży” will sail into Dover on the 16th September and will be welcoming visitors during the day. This voyage is part of a tour of European ports, Copenhagen, Gothenburg, Oslo, Dover and Boulogne-sur-Mer.
The ship is a Polish sailing training vessel launched in Gdańsk Shipyad in 1982 which since that time has made over 100 voyages, called at 300 ports all around the world and covered over 3,500,000 nautical miles and competed in many famous races Tall Ships Race (list attached). It is a fully rigged sailing vessel and is the successor of two other sailing vessels run by Gdynia Maritime University. The money to build the vessel was raised by Polish Youth and so it is fitting that the name "Dar Młodzieży" means “a gift of Polish youth”.
The ship is primarily used for young people who may wish to embark on a career at Sea. It is the students first voyage on the ship which will determine whether they wish to have a professional sailing career. Once on the ship the students are expected to fulfil many tasks, whether it is keeping watch on the navigational bridge, learning seamanship, cleaning the decks or navigating by the stars and satellite. Many of the roles on the ship require good leadership skills and this enables the students to have a good understanding of what is required of them now and in years to come.
The ship has a permanent crew of 40 and can accommodate over 150 passengers. It is a beautiful vessel and is admired through the world. Members of the Royal families, Heads of States, Artists, Businessmen have enjoyed the hospitality of this famous vessel.
On this occasion the "Dar Młodzieży" will be transporting The Polish National Symphony Orchestra of Katowice with their conductor Jacek Kasprzyk and soloist Ewa Kupiec, described as one of the fastest rising artists of her time. Much of the music has been chosen for its proximity to the sea but of course the music of Chopin will be the major influence of the concert and will include his Fantasy on Polish Airs and Andante Spianato and Grand Poloniase in E flat major. The orchestra visited UK last year when it performed in a sell-out concert at the Canterbury Cathedral with Krzysztof Penderecki conducting his critically acclaimed St Luke Passion as part of Sounds New Contemporary Music Festival 2009. The Orchestra will perform a concert titled DFDS Seaways Under The Flag of Chopin with programme of music by Chopin but also Britten and Debussy.
The events in Dover are organised jointly by the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra in Katowice, the Embassy of the Republic of Poland, Polish Cultural Institute in London and generously supported by the DFDS Seaways.
The media parteners of the event are Cooltura Polish Weekly Magazine, Polish Radio London and the web portal elondyn.co.uk
The whole voyage will be supported by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage, Fryderyk Chopin Institute in Warsaw and Adam Mickiewicz Institute in Warsaw.
