Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad heads The Guardian's books that define a decade

From only four books chosen to define the 1900s Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad heads The Guardian's shortlist.
Conrad's highly symbolic novella truly has its heart in the theme of "darkness". The African Continent was entirely "dark" in all its sinister and negative contexts as far as the Victorian were concerned. But as Conrad's Marlow retells his journey into the Congo to meet the intrepid traveller Kurtz, he promotes a then-modern theory that the very darkest parts of Africa might be the hearts of the "civilising" Europeans.

The closing date is 25th May and the winning title will be announced and debated at a panel discussion at the Guardian Hay Festival on 2nd June.
