Often referred to as a response to Kubrick's 2001, Tarkovsky's psychodrama is a visually striking meditation on grief, guilt and solitude. Adapted from Stanislaw Lem's novel, it's a poetic story of a scientist travelling into deep space, to a base circling a mysteriously powerful planet. Finding the station in chaos and apparently inhabited by his own deceased wife, he realises that his prime area of investigation will be his own psyche.
