Era Schaeffera is an interactive, audio-visual, multi-media performance Celebrating the 80th birthday of Poland's most prolific composer, playwright and philosopher Bogusław Schaeffer.
The performance features the Amadeus Polish National Radio Orchestra conducted by Agnieszka Duczmal, the Olga Szwajgier Jazz Quartet with vocalist Urszula Dudziak, Boguslaw Schaeffer himself on piano, and Schaeffer’s play A Multimedia Thing featuring actors Marek Frąckowiak, Waldemar Obłoza, Agnieszka Wielgosz, dancer Witold Jurewicz and soprano Valentina Pannino. Era Schaeffera is directed by Maciej Sobocinski.
Boguslaw Schaeffer is one of the prominent leaders of the post-WW2 European avant-garde, widely considered to be the ‘father of new music in Poland’. An author of forty plays, many books on modern music, as well as more than five hundred musical compositions, Schaeffer is also a graphic designer and amongst the most frequently performed playwrights in Poland today. His Klavier Konzert formed part of the film soundtrack to David Lynch’s Inland Empire and Eugène Ionesco wrote Three Dreams about Schaeffer in his honour.
A selection of graphic design by Schaeffer will be exhibited in the main Foyer at EICC during August, while drawings and graphics can be seen and samples of music heard at www.universalartsfestival.com
Presented by Aurea Porta & Universal Arts and supported by the Polish Cultural Institute, the Polish Ministry of Culture and National Heritage, the Adam Mickiewicza Institute, the Consulate General of the Republic of Poland in Edinburgh
